2. History of Monte Verità (by Marina Fraccaroli)
The story begins on a hill above Ascona, which from the beginning of the 20th century was to be called Monte Verità,, an allusion to the historical and mythological traditions according to which Truth is revealed on mountain tops (Mount Sinai, Tabor, Olympus, Parnassus and Fujiyama come to mind). From about 1870, the Locarno region became a centre of concentrated cultural and artistic development and output: a large number of intellectuals gathered together in Locarno, Ascona and Minusio, as if seeking refuge from the industrial culture dominating Northern Europe. This they rejected, and sought to create for themselves a world apart, founded on the principles of naturalism. The aim of this little community was the establishment of a society based on values opposed to those generally prevalent at that time. Theirs was to be a society based on complete freedom, simplicity, common ownership of property, new religious and spiritual values, the practice of nudism and symbiosis with nature. Their dwellings were to be houses of air and light and their diet one of natural foods. Thus they rejected politival authoritariianism, capitalism, religious dogmatism and sexual taboos. In 1869 Michail Bakunin arrived in Minusio and remained there for five years. On Monte Verit a commune with anarchic characteristics was established. This school of thought was then continued, from 1904, by Erich Mhsam and Johannes Nahl. Mhsam dreamt of founding a republic for the victims of capitalism and society, for the persecuted and the underclass. With the arrival of Raphael Friedeberg in 1904, socio-ethical tendencies began to filter into this anarchic current. From 1900, the hill above Ascona became a theatre tor the reformation of lifestyles and this continued into the 1920s. A Belgian, Henry Oedenkoven, bought the hill - already called Monte Verit - from the national councillor and theosopher Alfredo Pioda, and set up a commune seeking an outdoor way of life, a vegetarian diet, simplicity, nature and free love. Other movements followed at Monte Verit, focussing on psychoanalysis, on sexual revolution and on mythological symbolism. Psychoanalysis was first represented by Otto Gross, theoretician of the liberation of man through a vision of life without authoritarianism. In 1933 the first "Eranos Meetings" were organized. The name for the meetings was suggested by the religious scholar Rudolf Otto to the Dutch woman Olga Foebe-Kapteyn, founder of a spiritual movement characterised by its interest in myths, religions and symbolical archetypes, which in Ascona fused Western and Eastern philosophies. Simultaneous to these new cultural and philosophical currents, new artistic trends were developing. In 1910 Rudolf von Laban created the "Monte Verit Art School" which provided initiation into all types of expression. Thus a new form of dance arose, aiming towards the expression of both physical and mental states. This dance form was promoted by Charlotte Bara along the lines of the innovations introduced by Isadora Duncan. In 1926 the hill was bought by Baron Eduard von der Heydt, a great collector of art, who spurred Monte Verit on to its best artistic period. He had Emil Fahrenkamp build a new hotel, which allowed larger numbers of people to live in and pass through the centre. In the early decades of the 20th century, numerous artists, intellectuals and students made Monte Verit their cultural centre. Among those who spent time in the area were Carl Gustav Jung, Karoly Kereny, Erich Maria Remarque, Hermann Hesse, Adolf Portmann, Paul Klee, Hans and Sophie TSuber Arp, Robert Schrch, Oskar Schlemmer, Charlotte Bara, Marianne Von Werefkin, El Lissitzky, Alexei Jawlensky and many others. These were the golden years for Monte Verit. In 1956, Baron von der Heydt left the property on the hill to the Canton Ticino, and a new era began tor Monte Verit. In 1989 a private foundation was established whose members comprise the Canton Ticino, the Town Council of Ascona and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Plan was developed to encourage international cultural activities on an academic level through seminars and conventions on such diverse topics as scientific research, literature, history, etc. In 1992, a new infrastructure including both new and newly refurbished buildings was inaugurated, and with it a new era for Monte Verità.
Time table of the Monte Verità.
1869-1874
The Russian anarchist Michail Bakunin settles in Locarno. He lives from 1873 to 1874 at the "Baronata" inMinusio. His concept of Utopia is a society in which no one rules over anyone else. Antoinette de Saint-Leger, a Russian Baroness of German descent,
1885-1928
is the owner of the Islands of Brissago. The botanical garden on the island is her earthly paradise. Alfredo Pioda, a member of the Swiss Parliament and theosophist from Locarno, plans the foundation of a theosophical cloister,
1889
"Fraternitas", on Monescia, which is what Monte Verit was called at that time, together with Franz Hartmann and Countess Constance Wachtmeister. The champions of an alternative to Capitalism and Communism propose a new way of life and found a cooperative based initially on primitive socialism and subsequently on individualistic vegetarian principles, with a third phase of
1900-1920
development marked by the construction of a sun-bathing establishment and the Monte Verit Sanatorium. The founders are the pianist and feminist leader, Ida Hofmann, Henri Oedenkoven, the son of an industrialist, and the brothers Karl and Arthur (Gusto) GrSser. The anarchist medical doctor Raphael Friedeberg settles in Ascona. Thanks to him, many anarchists come to Ascona: Prince
1904
Peter Kropotkin, the doctor of the poor, Fritz Brupbacher from Zrich, Ernst Frick, Max Nettlau and also ex-members of the Social Democratic Party, Karl Kautsky, August Bebel and Otto Braun.
1905
The German anarchist Erich Mhsam would like to see Ascona as "The Republic of the homeless, the exiled and the destitute". The psychoanalyst from Graz, Otto Gross, plans a university in
1906-1911
Ascona for the emancipation of mankind, which will lead to a return to the communist paradise. The queen of Bohemian life in Munich, the "cosmic" Countess and
1909
writer Franziska zu Reventlow leaves Schwabing to go to live in Ascona and Locarno. Rudolf von Laban establishes his "School for Art" on Monte Verità, which is associated with the individualistic cooperative, and has the educational goal of introducing the
1913-1918
students to all the means of expression employed by human inventiveness. The "New Dance" is born, and Mary Wigman, Katja Wulff and Suzanne Perrottet become students of Laban. Isidora Duncan visits Monte Verità. Ascona becomes a haven for intellectual *migr*s along with
1914-1918
Zurich and Bern. The artists in particular begin commuting between the city (Zurich) and nature in the south (Ascona). Theodor Reuss, Master of the Order of the Templars of the Orient, organizes a congress on various themes at Monte Verit: societies with no national distinctions, cooperatives, modern
1917
education, women's rights in the society of the future, mystic freemansonry, new social structures and, lastly, dancing as art, ritual and religion. The culminating event of the congress is the performance of the ritual dance "Song to the Sun" executed by the Laban School of Dance; they dance from sunrise to sunset. Artists flock to Ascona in great numbers: Marianne von Werefkin,
1918
Alexei von Jawlensky, Arthur Segal, the Dadaists Hugo Ball, Hans Arp and Hans Richter. Ascona becomes a village of artists. The former Secretary of the Federation of Swiss Labour Unions,
1919-1964
Margarethe Faas-Hardegger, a Follower of the socialist ideas of Gustav Landauer, establishes an anarchist-communist agricultural community in Minusio.
1920
The founders of Monte Verit emigrate to Spain and then to Brazil. Monte Verit becomes a hotel business run by a trio of artists
1923-1926
(Werner Ackermann, Max Bethke and Hugo Wilkens), backed financially by William Werner. Walter Helbig, Ernst Frick, Albert Kohler, Gordon McCouch, Otto 1924 Niemeyer, Otto van Rees and Marianne von Werefkin form the artists' group "The Great Bear" (City Museum). El Lissitzky stays in Locarno, Ascona, and Ambr for health reasons.
1924-1938
Fritz Jordi establishes the agricultural community "Fontana Martina" in Ronco sopra Ascona. Monte Verit is acquired by Baron Eduard von der Heydt, banker
1926
of the former German Kaiser William II and one of the greatest collecters of contemporary, oriental and primitive art. The artists of the "Bauhaus" school (Albers, Bayer, Breuer, Gropius, Schawinsky and Schlemmer) discover Ascona as a holiday resort and a world apart from the "Bauhaus". The Monte Verità
1927
Hotel is built by Emil Fahrenkamp in "Bauhaus" style, and in Minusio the Sanctuarium Artis Elisarion is built as the repository for the painted dualistic philosophy of the world of confusion and the world of clarity (Klarismus) of the Baltic nobleman Elisar von Kupffer.
1927-1928
The San Materno Theatre is built for the Gothic-Egyptian dancer, Charlotte Bara, by the architect Carl Weidemeyer.
1928-1956
Ernst Frick carries out research on the Gallo-Celtic fortress of Balla Drum and develops a "global" system. The Swiss expressionist painters Ignaz Epper, Fritz Pauli and Robert Schrch settle in Ascona and the area nearby. Heinrich Vogeler, coming from Worpswede, a famous colony of artists near
about 1930
Bremen, collaborates with the experiment of "Fontana Martina". Carl Meffert and Clement Moreau are the illustrators for the publication of the "Fontana Martina" community. Their tylographs criticise the socio-economic conditions of the indigenous population of the Ticino for the first time. Stefan George dies in Minusio. The first emigrants from Germany
1933
arrive (Albert Ehrenstein, Else Lasker-Schler and Erich Maria Remarque). The first Eranos meeting takes place in Ascona-Moscia. Publication of the Ascona "Baubuch" (printed by Max Bill), which

1975
The principal salon is dedicated to Michael Balint, the London psychoanalyst and frequent visitor to Monte Verit. The history of Monte Verit finds expression as a "total work of art" in exhibitions and in book form following the structural 1978 model of the many- breasted goddess in Ascona, on the Islands of Brissago and in the theosophic villa of the founders of Monte Verit, Casa Anatta.
1978-1980
The Monte Verità Exhibition of Harold Szeeman is on display in the museums of Zrich, Berlin, Vienna and Munich. 1980 First Videoart Festival: meeting to exchange ideas and reflections on the new electronic images. 1983
The light-and-air construction Casa Selma (built in 1901) is opened as a second museum for the history of Monte Verit. After the history of Monte Verit, one now has the pictures as well, the very ones that were once exhibited there. The important exhibition "From Marees to Picasso - Masterpieces from the Von der Heydt Museum of the City of Wuppertal" enjoys great
1986
success and is housed in the Monte Verit Hotel, the Museum of Modern Art and the Beato Berno Cultural Centre in Ascona. The book "Mountain of Truth - the Counterculture begins", Ascona 1900- 1920 by Prof. Martin Green of Tufts University, Hanover, Massachusetts, USA, is published. The third museum on Monte Verit is inaugurated: It now houses
